Facts and Figures The Soft Drink Industry in 2018
JSDA aggregates data from member and partner companies to publish Soft Drink-Related Statistical Data Report.
We summarize the soft drink industry based on production volume and manufacturer sales.
These figures are then used in a number of areas such as analysis of industry trends.
Total production 22.746 billion liters (105.2% vs PY)
Renewed record-high for four consecutive years.
This is equivalent to 493 ml, or one 500 ml PET bottle, of consumption per person per day by total population in Japan.
Manufacturer sales 4,050.3 billion yen (102.6% vs PY)
Sales exceed 4 trillion yen for the first time ever.
The scale of the soft drink industry is one of the largest among the processed food sector in Japan and continues to grow steadily.
Soft drinks occupy a familiar, indispensable part of our everyday lives.
Amazing number of new products are released every year that are enjoyed by our consumers.
The power of the market is equivalent to nearly 11 billion yen per day on a production basis.
Note) Different content level or different container design of a same product is counted as one item.
Note) New products include renewal products.
Tea products holds the top share, which consists of numerous sub-categories.
PET bottles reached a 74.6% share in 2018.
Facts and Figures Our Environmental Initiatives
Our environmental initiatives to create a recycling-based society are referred to as “3R,”representing Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
The soft drink industry continues to promote the 3R initiatives and cross collaboration among the promoting groups within the industry in accordance with the 3R Promotion Voluntary Action Plan formulated by the 3R Promotion Association Liaison Group.
The First Voluntary Action Plan was launched in FY2006. Currently, third edition of this voluntary action plan that started from FY2016 is in action.
Reducing CO2emissions to prevent global warming
The soft drink industry is working to meet a 10% reduction in CO2emissions index results over FY1990 levels by FY2020 (excluding in-house container production).
Reductions in CO2emissions index in 2017 resulted at 0.91 (using FY1990 as a baseline of 1), a 0.03-point increase over the previous year.
In spite of aggressive efforts to convert fuel sources to LNG and city gas, increasing production volumes, further diversification in product categories, and a shift towards smaller batches of production have led to an increase in this index, which we acknowledge as an issue that needs to be addressed going forward.
Creating a recycling-based society by reducing industrial waste
The industry is maintaining the voluntary 99%-plus recycling target set by the soft drink industry.
Final disposal quantities are on the rise, meaning that we have not met this target.
